Break it Down

It has been said that “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” and this is so true. Big goals are achieved not through one big moment, but through many small steps. No matter what the goals is, every decision we make throughout a day can move us closer or farther away from our objective.

Many times we can get overwhelmed by the magnitude of the challenge ahead of us before we even get started because we forget to break it down. This is true of any undertaking in life – not just in health and nutrition. Breaking down our big assignments at school or work into small steps everyday will get you to your deadline without the stress normally associated with it. Doing one more repetition in a series of exercises each time you are in class can bring you amazing results. Changing one of your eating habits can help launch a whole new lifestyle. I have seen this so many times in my years as a personal trainer and it still excites me! One step can lead you to an AMAZING transformation!!!!

It is great to reach for the stars when setting goals, but many times our brains can go on overload with something that it sees as impossible. By taking a logical and systematic approach of writing down our goals and breaking them into smaller goals, our brains “get behind” the idea. No longer does your brain think it is too difficult to achieve. Our brains are such a powerful part of our makeup as a human being that it can determine whether we succeed or fail before we even start a project. So if our brain can “visualize” us reaching a goal using a one step at a time process, we can accomplish anything. And I mean anything!!!

There is a song that has become one of my “Favorites” and really speaks to me during a workout and it is called One More and is sung by the group Superchick. This song really makes me push myself a little harder during a run or weight lifting session and it goes like this:

“One More”

It feels like I have lost the fight

They think that I am staying down

But I’m not giving up tonight

Tonight the wall is coming down

I am stronger than my fears

This is the mountain that I climb

Got 100 steps to go

Tonight I’ll make it 99

One more

Go one more

Yeah, yeah

One more

Go one more

Go one more

Yeah, yeah

I have everything to lose

By not getting up to fight

I might get used to giving up

So I am showing up tonight

I am my own enemy

The battle fought within my mind

If I can overcome step one

I can face the 99
